The first call from a cell phone was made 40 years ago today
(Credit:Cisco)Martin Cooper changed the world when he made the first cell phone call 40 years ago. The former Motorola vice president and division manager made the call on the company’s DynaTAC phone while standing in front of the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue. His first call: to the head of research at Bell Labs, a company that also was attempting to build the first cell phone. Cooper’s call did more than untether people from their ffxiv power leveling fixed phone lines; it opened the door to true mobility and continues to affect virtually every aspect of our lives. Long gone are the clunky phones, such as the DynaTAC, or the large cell phone famously Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 used by Zack Morris on the television sitcom “Saved by the Bell.” In their places are sleek smartphones and tablets with massive brains and access to a super-fast wireless connection. People don’t just use their mobile devices to make phone calls. In fact, they do a lot less of that now. They use their phones to browse the Internet, order delivery food, play word games with each other, and keep up with the ever-increasing tsunami of e-mails and text messages. Cooper remains a revered figure in cell phone history. He had another moment to shine at Motorola’s Razr event last fall. When current Motorola executives introduced him, the throngs of jaded bloggers and reporters stopped their typing to pay their respects for his accomplishments. Martin Cooper and his Motorola DynaTAC.(Credit:Kent German/CNET)A lot has changed since Cooper worked at Motorola and the company was a world-beating giant in the telecom industry. Now, what’s left of the Motorola cell phone division largely has been swallowed up by Google, which now dominates the industry with its Android mobile operating system. What hasn’t been gobbled up by Google and its partners (primarily Samsung Electronics) is left to Apple, the other major player in the field. As part of the 40th anniversary, Cisco put together an infographic (above) that highlights some of the milestones that got us from Cooper’s first call to today’s Google Glass and beyond. In 1992, the first commercial text message is sent (“LOL”). Two years later, Tetris makes its debut as the first cell phone game. In 2004, the first Wi-Fi-certified cell phone is introduced and is now a commonplace feature as the wireless carriers look to unload as much traffic as possible on Wi-Fi. From brick phones to pocket computers in 40 years (pictures) 1-2 of 19Scroll LeftScroll RightThe graphic also highlights the introduction of Apple’s App Store in 2008, marking the first of a new generation of application stores and inspiring legions of developers. Looking ahead, the advent of cellular technology has enabled wholly new connected devices, as evidenced by an image of Google Glass making its way to the infographic. The carriers, meanwhile, are looking to connect everything from cars to dog collars and medicine pill bottles. Cisco projects by 2017 there will be more than 10 billion mobile devices around the world, with video accounting for 66 percent of all traffic. But it all goes back to that first phone call.

But rarely does someone try to arrest us for it.16-year-old Kiera Wilmot wasn’t so lucky. This student at Bartow High School in Florida allegedly thought she’d put a couple of household chemicals in an 8-ounce water bottle, just to see the reaction. The reaction was that she was expelled and marched off in handcuffs, accused of felony possession/discharge of a dangerous weapon.According to the Ledger, Wilmot performed her experiment behind the school cafeteria. There were some kids in the vicinity. She believed that there would only be smoke and not the small explosion, which the school principal, who was standing nearby, described as sounding like a firecracker. It doesn’t appear to have been an officially sanctioned school experiment (and police reportedly wouldn’t say what the chemicals were). But there is no evidence that there was any malice in her actions. As WTSP-TV reports, Wilmot’s principal, Ron Pritchard, explained that she was notorious — for being a very nice person.More Technically IncorrectKeith Richards: Apple’s iPod shortchanges customersJC Penney’s begging ad criticizes former Apple execMisspell Google search terms? The top of the bottle popped off and there was some smoke. No one was hurt. This all happened around 7 a.m., local time, on Monday of last week. Pritchard agreed that Wilmot had merely been trying an experiment. He told WTSP: “She wanted to see what would happen (when the chemicals came together), and was shocked by what it did. Her mother is shocked too.”She was completely honest about what she had done. This wasn’t good enough for the Polk County Schools District. Oh, no, Wilmot needed to be made an example of. The district issued this statement: “Anytime a student makes a bad choice it is disappointing to us. Unfortunately, the incident that occurred at Bartow High School yesterday was a serious breach of conduct. In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, we simply must uphold our code of conduct rules. We urge our parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions. We will not compromise the safety and security of our students and staff.”So, despite the fact that Wilmot reportedly told police this was nothing more than the experimentation of a curious mind, she was taken to a juvenile detention center and may now be labeled a felon. One of the most important parts of a science education lies in the need to experiment. It’s only curious minds that make the world progress. One of the most important parts of a general education is the teaching of judgment. Who exercised the worse judgment here? Kiera Wilmot or the Polk County Schools District and the local police?

Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 On April 28

Ten years ago today, space tourists began to play
On April 28, 2001, Dennis Tito became the first-ever space tourist. Riding aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket, Tito was the first customer of Space Adventures, a company founded to take non-astronauts to space–for tens of millions of dollars. Here, we see Tito doing weightlessness training prior to his flight.(Credit:Space Adventures)On April 28, 2001, the world of exploration changed forever. On that day 10 years ago, Dennis Tito, a wealthy engineer who had recently turned 60, broke one of the most sacred barriers in exploration: he became the first private citizen to go to space.Blasting off on that Saturday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard Russian rocket–Soyuz TM-32–Tito was on his way to a place only professional astronauts and military- or government-sponsored personnel had been able to go before.Marking 10 years of space tourism (images) 1-2 of 14Scroll LeftScroll RightTito was the launch client for a new company called Space Adventures that was founded in 1998. Led by chairman Eric Anderson, the company set out to change one of the most fundamental dynamics of space travel and make it possible for the first time for private citizens to experience life beyond Earth. This was not possible in the United States. NASA was not interested in taking tourists aboard the Space Shuttle–and never has been–explained Space.com senior writer Clara Moskowitz. And so those like Tito who wanted to make like an astronaut had no choice but to go the Space Adventures route–which meant traveling to Russia for weeks of training and an eventual trip aboard one of that country’s Soyuz rockets. This would not be Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 cheap, of course. In the beginning, Tito paid about $20 million, Moskowitz said, an amount that would be today considered “a bargain,” given that a trip aboard one of the rockets to the International Space Station now runs more than $40 million. But in the 10 years since Tito’s flight, Space Adventures has booked more than $250 million in spaceflights, the company said. In addition to Tito, Space Adventures has been the booking agent for several other “self-funded” astronauts, including South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, Iranian-American engineer Anousheh Ansari, American video game developer Richard Garriott, Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, and Microsoft software guru Charles Simonyi, the only two-time space tourist.Related links• Amazing videos of SpaceShipTwo in flight• Celebrating 50 years since Yuri Gagarin’s ‘Let’s Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 Go!’ • Simonyi signs up for another rocket ride • Spaceflight to cost $40 million in 2009But back then, in the spring of 2001, this was an entirely fledgling venture, and Tito was about to do something that was seen as being just the first step to a possible eventual democratization of space.”It was the first time a private citizen had paid his own way to go to space,” said Moskowitz. “Up until then, it had only been professional astronauts and military…The rest of us were earthbound. It was the first time that everybody got a glimpse that maybe we could go to space, too.”While it’s clear that a Space Adventures trip is only available to multimillionaires today, Moskowitz said the reason Tito’s flight was so important was that it was a necessary first step down the long road towards much cheaper space travel. “The more demand for private space flight,” she said, “the more those flights will take place and the more the price will come down. It’s the first step pointing to the future, and it gives the rest of us hope that eventually, the price will come down to the point where you don’t have to be a multimillionaire to go to space.”To be sure, though, if that happens it’s decades away. British entrepreneur Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic promises $200,000 trips to space in the next year or so, but those are sub-orbital flights that return to Earth without passengers having even made a full trip around the planet. By comparison, Tito not only got to travel to the space station, he got to spend eight days there.’It’s now or never’In an interview in Space.com, Tito explained that he had first come up with what he called his “lifelong goal” to go to space around the time of Soviet hero Yuri Gagarin’s first flight in 1961. “So here I was, in the year 2000, and I was about to turn 60,” Tito told Space.com. “I said, ‘Time is running out.’ Because at that point, the oldest person that ever flew as a rookie, to my knowledge, was Deke Slayton, who was 51. So I was getting over the hill, I thought. So I said, ‘It’s now or never.’”Clearly, he made it, and as he told Space.com, the experience was memorable for a wide range of reasons. Perhaps the part that stuck with him the most was something he might never have guessed. “They had pencils hanging from strings in the cabin of the Soyuz,” he recalled. “And these pencils just started floating, and I knew it was weightless. You couldn’t really tell yourself, because you’re strapped in with your belts, so you didn’t float at all. But I knew that we were in orbit. And I looked out the window, saw the blackness of space, saw the curvature of Earth and I just said, ‘Yes. I made it. I accomplished my life’s dream.’ And that moment I will never forget.”

Tangiers: A stealth game inspired by Dada, David Lynch
(Credit:Andalusian)The screenshots and videos from U.K.-based studio Andalusian’s Tangiers are unsettling — deep with jagged shadows and discordant colors, the graceful, spindly-legged gait of the not-quite-human protagonist. Even to perhaps the most jaded eye, Tangiers has an eerie appeal, and all the hallmarks of a cult hit. Alex Harvey conceived of Tangiers, quitting his job of five years to create his first-ever video game, forming Andalusian Games with friend Michael ffxiv power leveling Wright (the name is a nod to Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s “Un Chien Andalou”). It’s a culmination of his passions: the twisted world of absurdist surrealism with stealth-based gameplay and exploration. The protagonist is a stranger in a strange land. You have arrived from elsewhere, and for an unknown reason have to find and remove five other beings — whether by death or kidnapping. But in arriving, you have broken the world, shattering and warping it.(Credit:Andalusian) In the sandbox-style game, you choose how to play. You are encouraged to sneak around, hiding in the shadows (interacting too much in the world will cause it to crumble and rebuild, each action having consequences on the land and cityscapes around you, which ignore and flout the laws of physics). Each play through of the game will bring something new; no two will ever be the same. The fragile state is inherent in the entire setting. The spoken words of its inhabitants materialize physically — collect the frustrations of a guard unable to locate you and use them to distract, mislead and spread disinformation. Gather the intimate words of an illicit conversation and use them to unveil secrets, hidden pockets within the city. Turn them into reality — a character mentions rats and you can turn his words into a devouring swarm of them. The game borrows a little from Thief, involving sneaking up and taking foes down from behind, but there the similarities seem to end. The constantly evolving environment derives from the Dadaist cut-up technique, the distorted figures like something out of Max Ernst paintings. It looks like something utterly unique unto itself. An ambitious project for a first-timer, to Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 be sure, but one that could inspire a new genre of surrealist titles and hang proudly under the banner of art. Tangiers is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, where $15 will get you a copy of the game upon its release in mid-2014 for PC, Mac, and Linux. We think any gamer should at least take a look. (Credit:Video screenshot by Michelle Starr/CNET Australia)Lots of people rely on an iPad in the kitchen. In addition to using cooking-specific apps, you can look up recipes on Web sites, and drop the tablet into a book stand and have a pretty decent stand-in cookbook that can also double as a measurement converter and cooking encyclopedia for definitions and techniques. Sharp wants to go one better. It’s currently looking at bringing to market the Chop-Syc, a high-tech chopping board prototype with an embedded touch-screen LCD tablet and built-in scale for weighing ingredients. Designed by Siobhán Andrews as the winning entry in Sharp’s #GetItDownOnPaper competition to win a two-month internship, the idea is to make healthy cooking and portion control much easier.Related storiesWilliams-Sonoma smart thermometer talks more than turkeyCalling all cooks! Surprise! ‘Star Trek’ gold shirts more deadly than red shirts
The redshirt rule never applied to Scotty.(Credit:VeryDemotivational.com)It’s not easy being a “Star Trek” extra. I can only imagine the cold sweats and terror you’d feel if the wardrobe manager handed you a fresh red shirt from the rack. Your chance of making it through the episode just took a dive. Or did it? New mathematical calculations show that the redshirt death rate may not be as dire as we thought.Matthew Barsalou breaks down the numbers for Significance Magazine. He sticks with the original series and starts by looking at the casualty rates for the different uniform colors across all three seasons. There were a total of 55 deaths. In sheer numbers, redshirts took the brunt of it with 24 dead. Only 9 characters wearing the yellow/gold command uniforms kicked the space bucket. Rounding it out, 7 blue shirts bit the dust and 15 of the deceased were of an unknown uniform color. If you just stop there, it sure looks like redshirts are the most dangerous branch of Starfleet service. But wait, there’s more. With an official count of 430 total crew members, the numbers show that 239 work in security, engineering, and operations, wearing red shirts. Related storiesShatner: J.J. Abrams a ‘pig’ for taking on ‘Star Wars”Star Trek’ fusion impulse engine in the worksBarsalou then goes all math geek and applies to the data the Bayes’ Theorem formula for calculating conditional probabilities. After a little mathematical shake and bake, he determines there is a 61.9 percent chance that any given casualty is wearing a red shirt. That still sounds high, but it’s not really once you consider the sheer number of redshirts running around the Starship.”Although Enterprise crew members in redshirts suffer many Ffxiv Power Leveling 1-50 more casualties than crew members in other uniforms, they suffer fewer casualties than crew members in gold uniforms when the entire population size is considered,” Barsalou writes. “Only 10 percent of the entire redshirt population was lost during the three year run Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 of Star Trek. This is less than the 13.4 percent of goldshirts, but more than the 5.1 percent of blueshirts.” There you have it. Tesla battery swap a dead end
Tesla's demo shows how fast the Model S's battery can be swapped.(Credit:Tesla)One hundred years ago, car makers could have devised different fuel types and filling techniques for their internal-combustion cars, and drivers would have had to visit a Ford station, a Dodge Station, a Chevy station, or whatever the make of their car, to fill the tank. Fortunately, gasoline and filling standards prevailed. In a publicity stunt last night, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk began pushing electric cars on the nonstandard path that gasoline cars didn’t take.At Tesla’s design studio in Los Angeles, Musk showed a video of a Tesla employee filling the tank of an Audi, while simultaneously a Model S drove onstage and had its battery replaced. A timer ticked off the seconds and, as the Model S battery swap was finished in 90 seconds, another Model S rolled out for its battery swap. Meanwhile, the Audi took more than 4 minutes to fill up.The demonstration was completely realistic. The Model S was designed for quick battery swaps. ffxiv power leveling You can argue that the Audi driver took extra time swiping his card to pay for the gasoline, but Tesla could use automatic payment technology, as the Model S is a very connected car.Related storiesTesla Model S reviewTesla demos electric battery swapTesla announces Supercharger networkWatching Tesla’s video, it gave me chills — the bad kind — when Musk said Model S owners could pull into a “Tesla station.” Will the landscape be populated with Nissan Leaf stations, Honda Fit EV stations, Ford Focus Electric stations? One advantage of electric vehicles is that the grid is pretty much everywhere. There are charging posts in public and private garages. We don’t need dedicated stations, as we have for internal-combustion vehicles.Of course, this battery-swapping technique isn’t Tesla’s first move down the nonstandard path. Its fast-charging technology, supplied by its network of Superchargers, is also a proprietary standard. Tesla’s Superchargers and its battery swap technique are great for Model S owners, but bad for electric-car development in general.Tesla’s “walled garden” approach is common in the technology industry. Apple, from which Tesla seems to have derived some of its inspiration, is notorious for coming up with proprietary technologies. Likewise, mobile phone makers tend to embrace captive markets, good for their bottom lines, but limiting consumer choice.Don’t get me wrong, I think most of what Tesla Motors — and Musk — have accomplished is brilliant. I absolutely love the Model S, and do think it is an excellent template for the future of the electric car. I reviewed one last year and gave it CNET’s Editors’ Choice Award. It also earned our Tech Car of the Year award.I have also been extraordinarily impressed with how Tesla built up a luxury car manufacturing plant faster than it would take most automakers to approve a new design. The Model S not only gives Tesla Motors credence as a serious automaker, but it also serves as a flagship for the nascent electric-car industry. In that regard, Tesla should be pushing for standards, especially in fast-charging. The Ffxiv Power Leveling PS3 company should be opening up its fast-charging technology to the SAE for standards approval, or adopting the SAE’s new Combo fast-charging technology. I wouldn’t suggest the rival ChadeMo standard, just because the bulky, ugly plugs don’t go with the Model S’ elegant aesthetic. If Tesla continues to ignore standards, the company could end up with Tucker and DeSoto, abandoned on the shoulder of the great American highway.

Seagate-authorized distributors have been notified of these changes, and the company expects the last 7200rpm products to ship midsummer. [Via X-bit Labs ]
